The Rightly Guided Caliphs

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar al-Faruq, Uthman Dhu'n-Nurayn and Ali al-Murtada: the four closest companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who led the Islamic Empire after him. The Prophet ﷺ named them "rightly guided" and told his followers to hold to their way. This site gathers what the Quran, the Prophet ﷺ, their fellow Companions and the great scholars of Islam said about each of them.

The foundation

Why "rightly guided"?

The title is not a later honorific. It comes from the Prophet ﷺ himself, and the Quran describes the nation they belonged to.

Abu Dawud 4607 · Tirmidhi 2676 · Ibn Majah 42

"Hold to my way and the way of the rightly guided, rightly guiding caliphs. Cling to it and bite on it with your molar teeth." The Prophet ﷺ said this in a sermon that made the Companions weep. It is the origin of the title "al-Khulafa al-Rashidun".

Abu Dawud 4646 · Tirmidhi 2226 · Musnad Ahmad

"The caliphate in my nation will be thirty years; then there will be kingship." From the Prophet's passing in 11 AH to the abdication of Hasan ibn Ali in 41 AH is exactly thirty years: Abu Bakr two years, Umar ten, Uthman twelve, Ali five, Hasan six months. Scholars such as Ibn Kathir point to this as a fulfilled prophecy.

Quran 48:29Tafsir al-Khazin · al-Qurtubi

"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves; you see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure." Several commentators read the four descriptions as portraits of the four caliphs in order: "those with him" (Abu Bakr, with him in the Cave), "firm against the disbelievers" (Umar), "merciful among themselves" (Uthman), "bowing and prostrating" (Ali). The verse ends: "Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good forgiveness and a great reward."

Quran 9:100

"The foremost, the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in excellence: Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him." All four caliphs were among the very first to believe and to migrate. This is why every mention of them is followed by "radi Allahu anhu", may Allah be pleased with him: Allah Himself said so.

Quran 48:18

"Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree." Abu Bakr, Umar and Ali gave the Pledge of Ridwan at Hudaybiyah. Uthman was away in Makkah as the Prophet's envoy, so the Prophet ﷺ placed his own hand on his other hand and said, "This is for Uthman."

Bukhari 3673 · Muslim 2540

"Do not abuse my Companions. If one of you spent the like of Mount Uhud in gold, it would not equal a handful of one of them, nor half of it." And: "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them" (Bukhari 2652).

Tirmidhi 3747 · Abu Dawud 4649

"Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise…" The hadith of the Ten Promised Paradise, narrated by Sa'id ibn Zayd and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf. The four caliphs are the first four names.

Bukhari 3655 · 3697

Ibn Umar: "In the time of the Prophet ﷺ we did not consider anyone equal to Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman." And Ali himself, asked by his son who was the best of people after the Prophet ﷺ, answered: "Abu Bakr." "Then who?" "Umar." (Bukhari 3671). The order of the caliphate was the order of their rank in the eyes of the Companions.

How sources are marked

Every quotation carries a small label so you know what kind of evidence it is.

Quran Sahih: authentic hadith Hasan: sound hadith Narrated in works of virtues Report from tafsir History and biography

Hadith scholars across the schools accept that reports with weaker chains may be narrated in the field of virtues (manaqib) when they do not contradict established teaching. Those are labelled so you can see them. Reference numbers follow the standard printed editions; please check with a qualified scholar before citing publicly.

A note on tone

These four men were friends, in-laws and brothers in faith. They prayed behind one another, married into each other's families and named their children after each other. This site presents them the way they saw one another: with love, and in order.

"Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith." (Quran 59:10)
