“A Day with your Lord which is like a thousand years”

The Qur’an states plainly that time is not the same for every observer and every realm. Twentieth-century physics found that, in its own domain, this is literally true.

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ وَلَنْ يُّخْلِفَ اللّٰهُ وَعْدَهٗؕ وَاِنَّ يَوْمًا عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ كَاَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّوْنَ ۝٤٧

And they ask you in haste for the punishment, and Allah will not make His promise untrue. And there is indeed such a Day with your Lord which is like a thousand years of your calculation.

Qur’an 22:47Sūrat Al-Hajj · The Pilgrimage

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلٰ࢜ىِٕكَةُ وَالرُّوْحُ اِلَيْهِ فِيْ يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهٗ خَمْسِيْنَ اَلْفَ سَنَةٍۚ ۝٤

The angels and Jibra'eel ascend towards His Majestic Court, that punishment will befall the disbelievers on a Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years (according to the worldly calculation of time).

Qur’an 70:4Sūrat Al-Ma'aarij · The Ascending Stairways

What the words say

There is a Day “with your Lord which is like a thousand years of your calculation” (22:47, see also 32:5), and the angels ascend on a Day “the duration of which is fifty thousand years” (70:4). Commentators explain these as days of the unseen realm or of the Last Day. Either way, the verses establish a principle: the duration of a “day” depends on whose day it is.

What science says

Until 1905, physics assumed a single universal clock ticking identically for everyone. Einstein’s special relativity (1905) showed that a moving clock runs slow relative to a stationary observer. General relativity (1915) showed that a clock deeper in a gravitational field runs slow too. These are measured facts, not theories awaiting proof:

  • 1971, Hafele–Keating: atomic clocks flown around the world on airliners disagreed with ground clocks by the predicted fractions of a microsecond.
  • GPS: satellite clocks run about 38 microseconds per day fast relative to ground clocks (about +45 from weaker gravity, −7 from orbital speed). Without correcting for this, positions would drift by roughly 10 km a day.
  • Muons created in the upper atmosphere survive long enough to reach the ground only because their clocks run slow at nearly the speed of light.

How close is the match?

The verses speak of realms beyond physics, and 1,000 or 50,000 years should not be treated as relativistic calculations. Attempts to derive the speed of light from 32:5 are examined on Claims We Don’t Make. Still, the Qur’an’s claim that time is relative to the observer, strange to classical physics, is now part of everyday engineering. We grade it a possible reading with a real conceptual resonance.

Calculator: how much does time slow down?

Special-relativistic time dilation

γ = 1 / √(1 − v²/c²). A traveller moving at speed v ages 1 year while γ years pass for someone at rest.

“An atom’s weight… nor anything smaller or greater than it”

The Qur’an names the smallest thing its first listeners could imagine, and then says there are things smaller still.

And if you (O Beloved) are engaged in any task and you recite a part of the Qur'aan on His behalf, and O people, whatever task you are engaged with, We are Witness upon you when you commence it; there is nothing in the earth or in the heaven even equal to an atom's weight hidden from your Lord, nor anything smaller or greater than it (i.e. the atom) which is not recorded in the Luminous Book.

Qur’an 10:61Sūrat Yunus · Jonas

And the disbelievers said, 'The Day of Judgment will never come upon us.' Say you (O Beloved), 'Why not? By the oath of my Lord; undoubtedly, it will definitely come upon you, the Knower of the unseen; nothing is hidden from Him, not equal to an atom's weight in the heavens nor in the earth can escape from Him, not anything less than that or greater, but it is in a clearly revealing Book.'

Qur’an 34:3Sūrat Saba · Sheba

What the words say

ذَرَّة dharrah in classical Arabic meant a tiny ant, or a mote of dust floating in a sunbeam, the smallest visible thing. Modern Arabic uses the same word for the atom. Both verses then add that nothing escapes Him, “nor anything smaller or greater than it (i.e. the atom)” (10:61).

What science says

  • c. 400 BCE: Greek atomists proposed that matter is made of indivisible particles. Atomos means “uncuttable”.
  • 1808: John Dalton’s atomic theory of chemistry.
  • 1897: J. J. Thomson discovered the electron, the first particle smaller than an atom.
  • 1911: Ernest Rutherford discovered the atomic nucleus, about 100,000 times smaller than the atom itself.
  • 1964–68: Protons and neutrons were found to be made of still smaller quarks, proposed by Gell-Mann and Zweig and detected at SLAC.

How close is the match?

The Qur’an’s point is God’s complete knowledge: nothing is hidden from Him, however small. It does not describe subatomic physics. The phrase “nor anything smaller… than it” refuses to set a lower limit, unlike the ancient idea of an uncuttable atom. That is a possible reading worth noticing, not a proof.

“We created all things in pairs”

وَمِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ ۝٤٩

And We created all things in pairs, that you may ponder.

Qur’an 51:49Sūrat Adh-Dhaariyat · The Winnowing Winds

سُبْحٰنَ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَ الْاَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنۢ͏ْبِتُ الْاَرْضُ وَمِنْ اَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ ۝٣٦

Purity is to Him Who created all, in pairs, from those things what the earth produces, and (He also made pairs) from themselves and from those things of which they have no knowledge.

Qur’an 36:36Sūrat Yaseen · Yaseen

What the words say

Zawjayn means two of a pair: mates, counterparts, complementary opposites. Ibn Kathīr lists heaven and earth, night and day, sun and moon, land and sea, light and darkness, faith and disbelief, death and life, as well as the pairs among animals and plants. 36:36 adds pairs “from those things of which they have no knowledge”.

What science says

Pairing runs deep in nature. Most plants and animals reproduce through male and female. Electric charge comes in positive and negative, and magnets have two poles. Every kind of particle has a matching antiparticle, with the opposite electric charge where the particle is charged. Paul Dirac’s equation of 1928 implied them and he predicted the anti-electron explicitly in 1931. Carl Anderson discovered it, the positron, in 1932. When a particle meets its antiparticle, both annihilate into energy.

How close is the match?

The verse is general and was understood broadly from the start. Antimatter is a striking example of pairs “of which they have no knowledge”, but it is one of many examples, not the verse’s specific meaning. We grade it a possible reading.

“Without columns”, “visible to you”

Allah is (the One) Who has raised up the heavens without columns; that you may see, then established His Authority upon the Throne, and made the sun and the moon subservient; each one runs in accordance to a fixed term. Allah plans the work and explains the signs in detail; somehow, you may be certain about meeting your Lord.

Qur’an 13:2Sūrat Ar-Ra'd · The Thunder

He created the heavens without any such columns that are visible to you, and placed (mountains as) anchors into the earth so that it may not tremble along with you, and spread out all kinds of animals therein. And We sent down water from the sky, so caused all kinds of elegant pairs (of plants) to sprout on the earth.

Qur’an 31:10Sūrat Luqman · Luqman

What the words say

Bi-ghayri ʿamadin tarawnahā can be read two ways, and classical commentators recorded both: “without columns, as you can see”, or “without columns that you can see”, meaning there are supports but they are invisible. Ibn Kathīr reports the second view from several early authorities. The translation shown reflects both: 13:2 “without columns; that you may see”, and 31:10 “without any such columns that are visible to you”.

What science says

Nothing visible holds up the Moon or the planets. What governs them is gravity, an invisible attraction between masses. Newton described it mathematically (1687). Einstein reinterpreted it as the curvature of space-time (1915). Physicists still do not know what gravity ultimately is at the quantum level.

How close is the match?

The reading “supports you cannot see” is ancient, and it fits the invisible structure of gravity elegantly. The verse does not name gravity, though. We grade it a possible reading.

Fire from the green tree: stored sunlight

اࣙلَّذِيْ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِّنَ الشَّجَرِ الْاَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَاِذَا͏ٓ اَنْتُمْ مِّنْهُ تُوْقِدُوْنَ ۝٨٠

'The One Who has created for you fire out of the green tree (i.e. this particular tree grows in Arabia), you ignite from it instantly, whenever you want.'

Qur’an 36:80Sūrat Yaseen · Yaseen

اَفَرَءَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِيْ تُوْرُوْنَؕ ۝٧١ ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْشَاْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا͏ٓ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِـٔ͏ُوْنَ ۝٧٢

71So, what do you say regarding that fire which you ignite? 72Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who are the Creator of it?

Qur’an 56:71–72Sūrat Al-Waaqia · The Inevitable

What the words say

God made fire for people “out of the green tree”. Commentators explain that the Arabs made fire by rubbing together green branches of two desert trees, markh and ʿafār. The verse uses this as a sign that the One who puts fire into moist green wood can bring the dead to life (36:78–81).

What science says

Green plants capture sunlight by photosynthesis and store its energy in chemical bonds, as sugars, cellulose and lignin. Burning wood releases that stored solar energy as heat and light. Coal, oil and gas are the remains of ancient living things, and most of their energy also came from sunlight captured long ago. In a real sense, every fire is sunlight trapped by something green.

How close is the match?

The verse’s primary meaning is the literal practice of fire-making, used as an argument for resurrection. The photosynthesis connection is a lovely possible reading of why green things hold fire at all.

“We have indeed created everything with a proper measure”: a finely tuned universe

The Qur’an describes a creation made with exact proportion and without inconsistency. Physics has found both uniform laws and finely balanced constants.

اِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ ۝٤٩

We have indeed created everything with a proper measure.

Qur’an 54:49Sūrat Al-Qamar · The Moon

اࣙلَّذِيْ لَهٗ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًا وَّلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهٗ شَرِيْكٌ فِي الْمُلْكِ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَقَدَّرَهٗ تَقْدِيْرًا ۝٢

The One to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and of the earth, and has not taken offspring (for Himself); there is no partner in His kingdom, and He has created everything, keeping it in proper measure.

Qur’an 25:2Sūrat Al-Furqaan · The Criterion

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيْزَانَۙ ۝٧

And Allah has raised the sky and set the scale.

Qur’an 55:7Sūrat Ar-Rahmaan · The Beneficent

What the words say

Bi-qadar means with measure, proportion and decree. God “created everything, keeping it in proper measure” (qaddarahū taqdīrā, 25:2). He “raised the sky and set the scale” (al-mīzān, 55:7). And the Qur’an asks, “what inconsistency (tafāwut) do you see in the creation of the Most Gracious?” (67:3).

What science says

  • Uniform laws. The same physical laws hold everywhere we can look. Hydrogen in a galaxy billions of light-years away produces the same spectral lines as hydrogen in a laboratory, shifted only by cosmic expansion. Constants of nature, such as the fine-structure constant, appear unchanged across billions of years to within tiny fractions of a percent.
  • Fine-tuning. Several constants seem balanced within narrow ranges that allow a universe with stars, chemistry and life. If the strong nuclear force were slightly different, stars could not build carbon in the way they do. In 1953 Fred Hoyle predicted a specific energy level in the carbon nucleus on this basis, and it was then found. The cosmological constant is smaller than naive theoretical estimates by an enormous factor. Astronomer Martin Rees surveyed such cases in Just Six Numbers (1999).

How close is the match?

That the universe is lawful, orderly and precisely proportioned is the plain meaning of these verses, and it is a founding assumption of all science. How to explain fine-tuning is debated. Believers see a Creator’s measure, while some physicists propose a vast multiverse in which we happen to occupy a life-friendly region. Science alone cannot settle that question. We grade the correspondence a possible reading, and a profound one.
